Importance of training

Employee training and development programs are essential to the success of businesses worldwide. Not only do these programs offer opportunities for staff to improve their skills, but also for employers to enhance employee productivity and improve company culture.

Employee development is the continuous effort to strengthen work performance through approaches like coaching, training sessions, and leadership mentoring. Training is a specific event that teaches new information or skills, often provided to new or newly promoted employees. Both are key functions of corporate human resources staff, who typically are responsible for planning and implementing these efforts.(online.maryville.edu)

What Is Employee Performance?

Employee performance is a measure of how an employee fulfills the duties of their role and behaves within a workplace. It is important to every aspect of the business because it can affect customer satisfaction, the company’s bottom line, company culture, and staff retention rates, to name a few consequences.

Employee performance includes the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of an employee’s output. An employee's performance is also indicative of how valuable they are to the organization. Employees are an investment, so their return on investment is essentially calculated by their performance.

Naturally, every business would like to hire and retain employees who provide high employee performance. And, while a company can’t totally control output, they can play a large role in supporting employees to do their best by ensuring that they are well supported. When employees are happy, they perform better. (lumeapp.io)

  5. Excellent Article!! In addition to the points you've provided, here are some further insights, A 1999 study conducted by Walker Information indicated that 33% of all U.S. employees intended to change jobs in the next two years, and that only 42% feel that their current employer deserves their loyalty (Gordon & Lowe, 2002). Numbers such as these indicate a serious challenge to organizations that wish to retain their key employees even in foreign countries like the USA. As employee turnover is high in most of the organizations in Sri Lanka. Do you believe that employee performance in organizations is improved by training in smaller organizations?

    1. Hi Jenifer,
Thank you your thoughts. Yes, I believe that training for smaller organizations could make an improvement in the performance of employees within organizations. There are reasons for this, in particular:
      * Small organizations tend to be more agile and adaptable. This means that they can be more responsive to their staff's needs, and have a better ability to adapt training programs in order to meet those needs.
*The smaller organizations tend to have a more balanced hierarchy. This means that there are more possibilities for employees to cooperate with their managers and others in decision making, which could lead to improved communication and collaboration.

According to Joseph(2019), There are a number of benefits, namely: engaging employees by providing them with the power to change their performance and behaviors; providing employees with detailed feedback and specific areas for improvement, and showing the employees that the organization recognizes individuals’ current challenges. Further, having a PIP process in place, the potential risk of litigation is reduced if performance does not improve and dismissal occurs. Employee development is essential for the success of any organization.

  9. As you highlighted in your article, there is a direct correlation between employee performance and employee training. Further adding to your article, the improved capabilities, knowledge, and skills of the talented workforce proved to be a major source of competitive advantage in a global market (McKinsey, 2006). To develop the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities of the employees and to perform well on the job, effective training programmes are required that may also affect employee motivation and commitment (Meyer and Allen, 1991). In order to prepare their workers to do their job as desired, organisations provide training to optimise their employees potential. Most firms, by applying long-term planning, invest in the building of new skills by their workforce, enabling them to cope with the uncertain conditions that they may face in the future and thus improving employee performance through a superior level of motivation and commitment.

Employees receive new skills, knowledge, and procedures through training, which improves their capabilities and effectiveness on the job. Employees can enhance their competencies, adaptability, and problem-solving skills through focused development programs, which will boost output productivity and quality.
