Article 03 - Role of Human resource management (HRM) in training and development of airline employees.
Employees are an organization’s greatest asset,(Kristina, 2017) it goes without
saying that training and developing employees needs to be a key and explicit
part of an organization’s strategy. There are many reasons why an
organization should prioritize investing in their people. One of the
most compelling rests in the fact that when done strategically, money
spent on developing human capital boosts productivity more than any other
spend. For aviation organizations, this represents a major capital
investment. It is imperative that those making decisions are equipped with
the proper skill set and competencies to make the right decisions.
The human resource
management (HRM) department plays a critical role in training and development
in airlines. HRM professionals are responsible for ensuring that airline
employees have the skills and knowledge they need to safely and efficiently
operate aircraft and provide exceptional customer service.
Here are some of the precise roles that HRM plays in training
and development in airlines:
·
Identifying
training needs: HRM
professionals work with airline managers and employees to identify the skills
and knowledge that employees need to be successful in their roles. They also
conduct surveys and assessments to gather data on employee skills and knowledge
gaps.
·
Designing training
programs: HRM professionals work with subject matter experts to design
training programs that meet the identified training needs. They also ensure
that training programs are aligned with the airline's safety and quality
standards.
·
Delivering training
programs: HRM professionals may deliver training programs themselves, or
they may hire external trainers. They also work with airline managers to ensure
that employees have the opportunity to participate in training programs.
·
Evaluating the
effectiveness of training programs: HRM professionals evaluate the
effectiveness of training programs to ensure that they are meeting the desired
outcomes. They collect data on employee performance, satisfaction, and
retention to measure the impact of T&D programs.
·
Managing training
budgets: HRM professionals work with airline managers to develop and
manage training budgets. They ensure that training programs are cost-effective
and that they are aligned with the airline's financial goals.
· Overseeing compliance with regulations: HRM professionals ensure that airline training programs comply with all valid regulations. This includes regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and other government agencies.
According to Laura (2022) there are 7 steps to identify the training requirements of airline employees.
1. Set clear expectations for each role
2. Monitor employee performance
3. Ask away
4. Analysis
5. Make the most of personal development plans
6. Use focus group to understand employee training and
development needs
7. Set up a system of mentoring and coaching
Why Should You Develop The
Ability To Evaluate The Effectiveness Of Your Training Programs?
Asha (2022)
stated clearly , When employees train often and learn effectively, the
results usually show up in organizational performance. There’s also a mountain
of research-based evidence that links effective training to exceptional
performance.
Yet,
surprisingly, a Brandon Hall Group research brief indicated that 9% of
organizations surveyed did not see a need to link training-induced behavioral
changes to business performance. Because many organizations have entrenched
training as standard operating practices, they therefore lack proper metrics to
measure training and its contribution to positive business outcomes.
Training Budget
Considerations – What is a Training Budget?
According to Sofema
Aviation Services, creating a training budget facilitates the detailed
management of the training program with the objective of ensuring all personnel
remain compliant with both mandatory training as well as to continue to grow
the skills and competencies of business employees.
The Training Budget is
a combination of direct and indirect costs associated with all training courses
required as a minimum to maintain regulatory compliance as well as employee
competence, additionally to ideally create learning development paths which
allow the employee value to the organization to grow.
Conclusion
Referring to the views
of Shalini (2023) HR facilitates a
well-designed learning and development process to help employees identify their
weaknesses and overcome them. Employees feel more valued and motivated when
they receive the personal attention they need, can learn at their own pace, and
are challenged on the job. Employees who are upskilled are more competitive and
contribute to the success of the company.
Organizations rely on
training and development as an essential component of HRM, helping their
employees grow and develop. By investing in training and development, HRM helps
organizations develop a skilled and competent workforce that can meet the
demands of an ever-changing business environment. Furthermore, the role of HRM in training and development of airline
employees is essential to the success of the airline industry. By playing a proactive
role in this area, HRM can help to ensure that airline employees have the
skills and knowledge they need to perform their jobs safely, efficiently, and
effectively.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your valuable comments.
DeleteAccording to Damian (2022) Operational effectiveness can be defined as a core objective of an enterprise where organizations seek to maximize the efficient use of resources in their business operations and to improve quality, productivity, or competitive positioning in their markets. Essentially, it is about the ‘what’ and doing the right things to execute a business plan or strategy to achieve desired objectives.
Human Resource Management (HRM) plays a pivotal role in the training and development of airline employees. HRM designs training programs addressing safety protocols, customer service, technical skills, and compliance. Tailored learning experiences improve employee competencies, ensuring passenger satisfaction and operational efficiency. HRM's oversight of training needs assessment, program design, and evaluation guarantees a skilled workforce, elevating airline performance, and sustaining a high standard of service.
ReplyDeleteNice article and a good read.
Indeed, tailored learning experiences can improve employee competencies, ensuring passenger satisfaction and operational efficiency.
DeleteIn line with the staff needs, it is more appropriate to offer tailored learning experiences. It is more likely that employees will be engaged and retain information learned when learning about topics relevant to their work. It is more effective to use specific learning experiences. It is more likely for employees to acquire the necessary skills when they are taught by themselves and in an individual manner suited to their training style.
Indeed, it is an interesting article about how HRM can involve airline training and development procedures. When it comes to the airline industry, it is imperative that almost all employees undergo the necessary training since it is highly correlated in safety and security aspects and is compatible with IATA (International Air Transport Authority) regulations. Most airline employees need to hold licences to do their respective roles and are required to continue their training in order to maintain their licences, so HMR plays a critical role in making sure that employees maintain proper licences and deploy valid licence holders to necessary tasks. Ultimately, well-trained airline staff enhance customer trust, maintain a strong industry reputation, and uphold the highest standards of safety and service excellence.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughts on my article. I agree with your views . As you have emphasized well-trained airline staff enhance customer trust, maintain a strong industry reputation, and uphold the highest standards of safety and service excellence.
DeleteIt is easier for customers to trust and feel confident in the ability of airline personnel to deliver safe and efficient service when they know that these employees are well trained. Moreover, Airlines with a reputation for having well-trained staff are more likely to be seen as reliable and trustworthy, which can attract more customers and boost sales.

ReplyDeleteGreat article and well explained. I agree with your view and the points that you emphasized in the critical, role of training and developing employees within organizations, particularly in the aviation sector. Investing in employee growth is crucial due to its potential to enhance productivity more than other expenditures. The HRM department in aviation plays a pivotal role by identifying training needs, designing programs, delivering training, evaluating effectiveness, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance. You also explained in the literature review Laura (2022) outlines seven steps for identifying training requirements, including clear role expectations, performance monitoring, feedback collection, analysis, personal development plans, focus groups, and mentoring.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, you also emphasized the importance of the significance of evaluating training program effectiveness, as effective training is linked to improved organizational performance. Nonetheless, some organizations lack proper metrics for measuring training impact. A Brandon Hall Group study reveals that certain organizations fail to see the need to correlate training with business performance, indicating a gap in evaluation strategies. Sofema Aviation Services defines a training budget as a tool to manage costs related to compliance and skill development, aiming to ensure regulatory adherence, employee competence, and organizational growth.
Another literature review mentioned "The organizing role and functions, recruiting, performance measurement, selection, planning, training and development, and administration of indemnification and benefits are all issues that are addressed by technological and conventional HRM. However, SHRM, it entails putting into place and creating sets of internally consistent processes and policies that make sure that an organization's human capital helps it achieve its business objectives (Baird & Meshoulam, 1988; Jackson & Schuler, 1995). (Qudah et al., 2014)
Thank you for your views on my article. The importance of evaluating training program effectiveness cannot be overstated. Effective training is linked to improved organizational performance in several ways.
Delete* Enhanced productivity: When workers receive proper training, they are better able to work effectively and efficiently. It can result in a higher output, reduced costs and better customer service.
* Improved quality: When employees are trained in the most up-to-date techniques and practices, their output can be expected to be higher than average. This could lead to a better product or service, which would then improve the customer's level of satisfaction and loyalty.
* Reduction in errors: Employees are more likely to make mistakes on the job if they have been taught how to prevent them. This is a way of saving time and money for the organization, helping to improve security.
